The history of Valentine’s Day and the story of its patron Saint are shrouded in mystery. No one really knows how long February has been celebrated as a month of romance. As we know it today Valentine’s Day contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition and has its origins in the 5th century.
There are a number of Saints called Valentine who are honored on February 14th. The day became associated with romantic love in the Middle Ages in England. This may have followed on from the Pagan fertility festivals that were held all over Europe as the winter came to an end. Traditionally, lovers exchanged hand-written notes. Commercial cards did not become available until the mid-nineteenth century. Now, over 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, second only to the exchange of Christmas cards.
