Randy Russell signs Ghost Cats of the South at Lorelei Books at 5pm. In this companion volume to the popular Ghost Dogs of the South, Randy Russell presents more than 20 original stories of cats who reach between the worlds of life and death. Each encounter is birthed from existing folklore, noted incidents of ghost cats, and first-person accounts. During his travels across the South, Russell has heard tales of a ghostly cat that digs for pirate treasure on the beach, a ghostly cat that helped a truck driver rescue a pair of accident victims in an overturned car. Some ghostly cats are devoted enough to help bereaved parents deal with loss. Others are vicious enough to return in the afterlife to take vengeance on cat-killing lawyers and philanderers. Lorelei Books, located at 1103 Washington Street, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 6pm. The book store showcases works by favorite regional authors. The owners may be reached any time by phone - 601.634.8624 - or by e-mail - loreleibooks@wave2lan.com or visit the website at: www.loreleibooks.com.

Formal dediction of the Connecticut Monument at Vicksburg National Military Park, 10:30 a.m. The dedication will take place at Grants Canal, LA, off old U.S. Highway 80 near the Village of Delta in Madison Parish. The park's newest monument honors the gallant soldiers of the Ninth Connecticut Volunteer Infantry who labored to construct a canal across the base of De Soto Point, opposite Vicksburg, in the summer of 1862. It was hoped by Union officials that this canal would create a channel for navigation and enable vessels to bypass the powerful Confederate artillery batteries mounted on the high ground at Vicksburg. The effort, however, failed as Union soldiers quickly fell victim to heat exhaustion, sun stroke, malaria, and various fevers that took a heavy toll of human life, including the lives of 153 men from Connecticut. The Connecticut Ninth Regiment Monument Committee was authorized by Governor M. Jodi Rell in 2005. This committee, in conjunction with the Connecticut Irish-American Historical Society, secured approval from the National Park Service to place the monument at the park's Grant's Canal Unit. The black granite monument features the State's Coat of Arms, the crest of the Ninth Connecticut Infantry, and faces of men of the regiment who labored on the canal all of which were hand etched by Stacy Mathieu of Mathieu Memorials.

Hand Tinting Photos Workshop Presented by Cami Calnan, 5:30-7:00 p.m. $30/SCHF member or $35/non-member. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to this all ages hand coloring class. This fun class will have a large assortment of hand color supplies – ranging from the traditional photo oils to tinting pens to pastels and watercolors – for students to try coloring with as application techniques are discussed and attempted. Each student can bring a photo they would like to add new life to with some color, but there will be prints from the photographer’s collection for students to tint as well, so bringing a print is not necessary. Black and white photos work best, and any finish will work (but matte is the easiest). Sealants and preservation of finalized work will also be discussed and any prints finished during the class will be sealed. Students are asked to bring any ideas or questions they may have as well as eagerness to color! For reservations or more info, call more info 601-631-2997 or email info@southernculture.org |
